I just love honeybees! And honey of course! Below you will find information about the importance of honeybees and links to more information about honeybees and how important they are for all of us.
THE IMPORTANCE OF HONEYBEES
The honeybee can exist without us but we cannot exist without the honeybee and her sacred service to our agriculture and health.
"Honey and pollen, which serve as the sole source of nourishment for these creatures, are some of the most delicate, rarefied and miraculous substances in all of nature" - Gunther Hauk, 'Toward Saving the Honeybee'
Honeybees are responsible for the pollination of one out of every three mouthfuls of food we eat.
"They are also responsible for pollinating 40-70% of our diet - including some of the tastiest foods we eat such as apples, peaches, strawberries, nuts, avocados, broccoli, and cucumbers - as well as medicinal plants such as Echinacea, Angelica, Rosemary, & Sage." -Gunther Hauk, Spikenard Honeybee Sanctuary, Virginia, USA. Honeybees are essential for human life. They are disappearing at an alarming rate across the world due to a combination of Colony Collapse Disorder, Varroa Destructor mites, pesticides and chemicals on GMO crops, Israeli Acute Paralysis Virus, monoculture agribusiness, hive beetles and general poor immune health caused by decades of industrialized commercial beekeeping practices.
Without these amazing creatures to pollinate our food crops, we would not have most fruit and vegetables to eat.
"Actually, every human being should show the greatest interest in beekeeping because, much more than you can imagine, our lives depend upon it." - Rudolf Steiner
